Hello 8th Grade Families,

Today, we continued reading S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. We reached a part of the book where Ponyboy was attacked by a groups of Socs (Socials). We discussed in great detail why this happened, and the 8th graders shared their thoughts on the matter. The general consensus was that of confusion; they couldn't understand what the reason was for Ponyboy getting beat up. The 8th graders couldn't defend why this group chose to hurt someone else other than the fact that he was a "Greaser". We continued with a discussion on stereotyping. I asked the 8th graders if they felt that the Socs were a gang, and they all agreed that yes they were. I then asked if they thought that the people in town would consider them a gang the same way they consider the greasers a gang. To this the 8th graders had to say no because of their appearance; the greasers wore blue jeans, white t-shirts, and slicked back hair while the socs wore nice sweaters, pressed pants, and drove nice cars. Again, this brought up the concept of stereotyping.

It was a rich discussion that I look forward to continuing. We will also talk about how the setting affects the plot and characters.
